Photo was taken on the 15 Apr 45 mission
when 500lb tanks of napalm were dropped for the first and only time by 8th AF
heavy bombers. The targets were strong points and flak batteries in the Royan
area on the west coast of France, where pockets of Germans were still resisting
Allied attacks.
By this time, H-15 CF 41-29340 YANKEE BUZZ-BOMB (7V N) - pilot: 2/Lt. Edward L.
Holmgren - had been paint-stripped (a rarity in 2nd AD) and was flying in # 3
position in the third squadron. (note the good view of the "hand-held guns" rear
turret).
