An original cadre ship delivered to Bruning, NE 29 Oct 43 and assigned to Bird's crew. On 25 Feb 44 with Gil Bradley's crew aboard, SOPHISTICATED LADY was hit by flak over Regensberg, losing the #2 engine and falling behind the formation. A running battle with fighters ensued and her gunners claimed 15 fighters shot down over the next hour with 1 gunner killed. The crew abandoned the ship over Yugoslavia and 9 evaded.
