Lost on Operation TIDAL WAVE, 1 Aug 43, Ploesti Romania - MACR 165 - Pilot James A. Gunn, Jr.

Started combat ops 13 May 43 and was shot down on the low level Ploesti mission 1 Aug 43 with the crew of Pilot Capt. James A. Gunn, Jr. Shot down near the Yugoslavia/ Bulgaria border by enemy fighters during withdrawal from the target in the same action that downed The WITCH (41-11840) flown by Pilot Julian Darlington. The sole survivor, Tail Gunner Stanley Horine, and Pilot Julian Darlington from The WITCH, were POWs together in Bulgaria.

Along with ARKANSAS TRAVELER, I painted two versions of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, PRINCE CHARMING, and all "Seven Dwarfs" (three versions of DOPEY) on B24-Ds in the Libyan desert in Africa 1942-43. I never signed them and never got credit.
