ROBERT DEAN AUGUSTUS |
Contributor - Jim
Augustus via my Father, S/Sgt. Robert Dean Augustus (Nose
Gunner)
On the back of this photo, dad has written: "SHACK JOB II/ship
#257, 1 Sep 43 in Wendover,
UT. Gun came loose from mount and Gil shot the nose out of the
airplane before he could get off the triggers. He knocked out 2
teeth!" Gil (S/Sgt. Jerome Gilgallon) was their
nose gunner at the time. He later became medically grounded after
reaching Pandaveswar, then my father became the nose gunner. My father was
assigned to the 436th Bomb Squad for his first 3 missions and was then
transferred to the 493rd Bomb Squad for the duration (47 missions).
