SALLY was named (and nose art
applied) in the
U.S. by Lt. Billie Blanton's Crew (later assigned to the 448th BG / 714th BS at Seething,
England). According to my father, SALLY was
not originally in a dress, but they were forced to paint a dress on
her at a stop on the way to England (Brazil?). Upon
their arrival in England, the plane was taken from them to be
refitted for war and they were given another, The WABASH CANNON BALL
(42-109793). They flew a number of missions until it crashed in England 2
Jul 44 on return from a
mission. On 12 Jul 44, they were in BIM BAM BOLA (42-94735)
and were shot down over Lake Constance, Switzerland on a Munich
raid, with half of the crew swimming the wrong way into
Germany! Luckily... my father swam to Switzerland.
