Quote from Pilot Lt. Maynard Kisinger
(in Col. Charles H. Freudenthal's excellent "A
History of the 489th Bomb Group"):
"As I was the only married member of my crew, my wife and I frequently
entertained all the others. Because they all knew her, the decision was made to
name the ship after her, Ruth E. Kisinger - so, The RUTH E-K. The phrase "ALLAH
HASSID" was picked up by two of my gunners , Herman Drawdy and Art DeVincenzi ,
while we were passing through Marrakech. According to these two stalwarts,
"Allah Hassid" conveyed the message that the plane couldn't be harmed , or
couldn't be touched. Our affection for The RUTH E-K extended to the point that
we were thoughtful enough to take another aircraft on the 11 August mission on
which we were shot down. The ill-fated plane we flew that day was STRUGGLE BUGGY
(42-94785)."
