My Great Uncle, William G. Smith, was the Radio Operator. They named their plane
when they stopped on their way to Africa, after picking up a bunch of rum in the
Caribbean, and named her RUM-BUGGY. They flew 38 missions, mainly based in
Italy, then went up to England to take over for Jimmy Stewart's crew once they
finished their deployment. My uncle said that the Pilot, Horace Ferry, was a
B-24 Trainer and knew the planes better than anyone else and that's the reason
why they came home!
