Shown with Pilot Douglas C. Richards (standing far right) and my Father, John F.
Litcher (Gunner, kneeling 3rd from left). He flew 52 missions, being shot down
on the final one in another A/C, 42-78256 (YOU NEVER HAD IT BETTER?), and was taken prisoner until liberated by Russians. The photo
was a publicity piece when the PURPLE SHAFT had a
piece of munitions pass through the plane but not explode creating a very large
hole. No one was seriously injured and the news story was picked up to be a
happy story for the home front.
