This patch was designed in 1941 and became the famous symbol of the USAAF in W.W.II. It was also used (without the wings) on U.S. aircraft. The "red dot" was confusing (with Japan's red sun aircraft markings) so it was removed! The current U.S. Air Force has recently readopted this W.W.II winged star emblem (with the red dot) for their uniform "buttons". Unfortunately, they didn't adopt the uniform patch...
