While the Indian chief with a war bonnet is one
of the more prevalent and noble images of native men, native
women were assigned the role of princess or squaw. Longfellow's romanticized MINNIEHAHA
was a fantasy of native women. She belonged
to the Paiute tribe, same as Hiawatha and Pocahontas.
