Periodically, Consolidated would take
the occasion of a new plane's test flight for a 'Photo Op', shooting a dozen or
so pictures of the plane in different views - sometimes in color. The mountains
to the east of San Diego were often the background, as in this case. 42-100347
was test flown 20 Dec 43, which is no doubt the date the photo was taken, and
accounts for the snow on the mountains.
As a matter of coincidence, in early 1944 as a 15 year-old, I wrote to
Consolidated and asked them for a picture of a B-24 "because my brother has been
assigned to one".
