Ship #21 over Ploesti
5 Apr 44. On 5 Apr 44, the 15th AF opened the campaign
against the vast oil refinery and transportation complex at
Ploesti, Rumania. Over the next six months, the 15th would make
22 missions to Ploesti. More than 200 heavy bombers would be lost
over this target alone. Note the enemy fighter and the B-24 on
the right side in the above photo. In the background (below ship #21), the Ploesti smoke screen is visible.
