My Grandfather, Robert Speck, was the Top Turret Gunner and
Flight Mechanic while in Italy between 1942-44. While there was a popular gospel
song at the time called "Great Speckled Bird" (by Roy
Acuff), family legend has told us that the plane was named this because of
all the aluminum patching done by Grandpa to patch up the bullet holes, giving
the plane a "speckled" look.
