JOHN BURCHALL |
Port
(Left) Side - Pronounced "Bomber Rang"
Survived Operation TIDAL WAVE, 1 Aug 43, Ploesti Romania
Contributor - Jack
Burchall son of John Burchall (T-Sergeant Electrician)
My Dad is the handsome guy second from the left. What a motley
crew... but they got the job done! Shortly after this pic
was taken, Eleanor Roosevelt was to make a scheduled visit. About
80% of all the nose art on our war birds had to be scrubbed off
because of indecent exposure. However, as the story goes, Mrs.
Roosevelt never showed! Decommissioned sometime in 1944 and was
sent back to the states for a bond promotion tour.

BOMERANG was the first 8th AF B-24 to
complete 50 missions. After completing 53 missions, was flown back to the States by Walt Stewart for a War
Bond tour. My Uncle was the Bombardier on BOMERANG on 1
Aug 43 mission to Ploesti. He was KIA along
with two of his fellow crew members on another B-24 during the
Osnabruck mission, 22 Dec 43.
