Bob Beatson is my point of contact and he was a
Navigator in a B-24 named "ALFRED", which was a popular
comic strip character of a sailor. Above the word
"ALFRED", is the name "Bob" (just under the window where
the bombardier and navigator would be stationed). I called
Bob Beatson and he said that "ALFRED" was a very
popular name and there was an "ALFRED", 2, 3, 4 and
5. He said that ALFRED II was badly shot up
during a mission and came home and crashed and burned with only a
single survivor. BTW, "ALFRED" and Bob Beatson had the
distinction of bombing Switzerland 1 Apr 44. It was
in the New York Times.
