On July 8, 1944 damaged 465 BG B-24H, S/N: 42-52420, blue ‘L’ left Vienna
towards Hungary. Her crew left the plane near Kemenesszentpéter. The Royal
Hungarian Police reported 20 captured American airmen at nearby Magyargencs, -
partially from this crew. The empty plane kept descending and hit the ground
near Külsővat, where it exploded on impact. The flying debris hit two men
(father and son) working in the fields who both passed away as their death
certificates state:
“July 8, 1944, Külsővat, Fisztó-field: Kalmár Gábor farmer (49) Cause of death:
during field work he was hit by an aircraft wreck carrying number 2420 [sic!]
which killed and partially burned him.” (Obviously this was the plane's tail
section.)
His son, Kalmár Imre (14) died two days later on July 10 in the hospital. Notes:
“burning and heart(attack) due to plane explosion.” (Info via Jánkfalvi Zoltán)
