Transferred from the 486th Bomb Group April, 1944. Lost during forming up for a mission
21 Apr 44, Lt. Forrest C. Havens crew.
(8 killed & 2 badly injured). The art work was painted by Clayton E. Hutsell, Gunner on Lt. William B.
"Pappy" Monroe's crew in the 486th BG. It was originally going to be called
"PAPPY AND HIS CHILLUN". Monroe's wife Fanny sent a copy of the cartoon character "Pappy Yokum" after he had overindulged in turnips during the turnip
harvest and turned into a green imp with pointed ears. The nose art was painted in
Marrkesh, but Hutsell ran out of red paint, and the
"Name" was never added. Hutsell recalled "After a few days at Sudbury, we went to our hardstand for a
training flight. Lo and behold, our plane was gone and my art work with
it!!"
